Is Direct Mail Marketing Still Relevant?

Does Direct Mail Marketing Really Connect in the 21st Century?

Recommend Us On Google

The recent obsession with social media marketing and online marketing has left old-school direct mail marketing in the dust. Right?

The truth is that direct mail is still an effective option for many smart multichannel marketers. Even giant companies like Google invest heavily in direct mail marketing each year.

Naive Notions

Are you leaving direct mail out of your marketing mix because you think it’s too expensive?

There’s a naive notion that social media marketing is essentially free when in fact effective social media marketing either involves the investment of a substantial amount of time or a substantial amount of money if you choose to hire a professional. All marketing requires an investment of money, time or both.

Regardless of channel, all successful marketing involves targeting a relevant audience. With this in mind, I wanted to share a few simple ways that you can use good, old direct mail marketing to get more business from your target audience.

Three Ways Direct Marketing Can Work For You

1) Market to Existing Customers:
This is one of the most overlooked opportunities. The sad truth is that MarketingSherpa.com estimates that it costs five to seven times more to acquire a new customer than it does to sell more to an existing customer, yet many businesses have zero dollars invested in marketing to their existing customers.

I’m a huge believer in multi-channel marketing. Your customers choose to interact with you using the channel that’s most convenient for them, not the channel that’s most convenient for you. Multichannel marketing can be intimidating but done correctly, you’re not reinventing yourself with each marketing platform, you’re simply sharing a consistent marketing message across multiple platforms.

You’ve invested time and money creating a website and online presence for your business. Direct mail is a fantastic vehicle for driving existing customers to your online marketing. This includes not only your website, but also your Facebook page, Twitter account, your company blog and even your e-newsletter sign up form.

QR Codes, direct mail, online marketing, naples marketing firm

QR Code for The Direct Mail Man

QR (Quick Response) Codes are a free and simple way to use direct mail marketing to engage your existing customers online.

Why are QR Codes important?

According to Mashable.com, there are now more smartphone owners in the US than there are people with college degrees. QR Code scanning grew by 1,200% in the last 6 months of last year in North America.

If you’re not already including QR Codes with your existing marketing, you need to start right away.

2) Leverage the New USPS Bulk Mail Program:
Recognizing that they were too difficult to work with and too expensive for many businesses, the USPS launched a new bulk mail program in March of this year. The program called Every Door Direct Mail (EDDM) does not require a bulk mail permit or mailing list, and the postage is just 14.2 cents a piece. This is a viable, cost-effective way to target prospects by geography.

If you’d like more details on this new program, please take a look at my recent post, New Business Mail Option: Every Door Direct Mail.

3) Target your best prospects:
Use demographics to drill down to prospects with the highest likelihood of purchasing your product or service. While bulk mail programs like Every Door Direct Mail reinforce the perception that direct mail is only appropriate for targeting prospects by geography, this is simply not true. Geography is simply one of the available demographics for targeting new prospects by mail.

Some of the most effective bulk mail campaigns involve the use of Lifestyle Mailing Lists. These lists target prospects based on their hobbies and passions. Lifestyle lists are compiled using information gathered from magazine subscriptions, product warranties, surveys and spending habits.

People lament about the amount of information that Facebook has accumulated, but this same information is accessible for offline marketing as well.

Lifestyle Mailing Lists can be used to reach out to people who like to golf, garden or collect antiques. These lists can be used to target people with certain medical ailments. There are even targeted lists of people who like to drink wine.

How do your best customers spend their time? What are their hobbies? How can you use this information to target them with your marketing?

If you prospects are other businesses, you may be interested in a Business Mailing List. These lists include a wealth of information including CEO/president/owner, estimated annual revenue, number of employees, years in business, etc. Business lists can be further targeted by industry.

Direct mail marketing is a cost-effective option for both marketing to existing customers and attracting new customers, but it often gets overlooked in favor of trendier marketing options. Maybe it’s time for you to add direct mail marketing back in your mix.

How do you incorporate direct mail in your marketing? Please share your comments below.

Nielsen Names Generation C as Digital Audience

Nielsen Names Generation C as Digital Audience

A new generation is born called Generation C short for the “connected” generation.

Assumptions may have business owners thinking this is a generation outside of the target audience traditional 25 to 54-years-old, but according to Nielsen and NM Incite’s U.S. Digital Consumer Report released in February, Generation C is the primary digital consumer audience.

Between the ages of 18 and 34, Generation C, formerly known as Generation Y, is connecting with brands and products in new and unique ways.

This spend-happy audience makes decisions on wants not necessarily needs, and frankly their needs are defined a lot looser than those of us planning for retirement soon.

Although Generation C may appear to have less buying power than Baby Boomers, they are now the primary target audience, because of their diverse media habits making them an impossible captive audience. Download your free copy of the U.S. Digital Consumer Report.

Best Online Advertising Tricks

Subscribe to the DREAMFly Marketing Blog.

Make Online Advertising Less Tricky – Make It Simple

To market online, you better make sure you know who your target audience is. You should never guess with any advertising, especially online, because unlike your nice local magazines, it will cost you a lot more with useless click-throughs if you are not marketing to the correct audience.

Creating Online Ads With Call to Action
Ads must have a call to action. You should not expect people to just click on your ad unless you are doing a serious giveaway like a car or a home. There is so much online that browsers see, you really have to call their attention and give them a reason to click.

Best tip to accomplish this is if you are marketing for example a sale of 25% off your products, use a call to action like “Empower Your Body buy vitamins 25% off” or some kind of wording that tells the browser why he or she should care about the sale or products you are marketing.

Determine CPC or CPM
What in the world am I talking about? Some may know. Others may be lost at this point. CPC is the price you pay per click for an online advertisement when someone actually clicks through to your website. CPM is the price you pay for an online ad by the number of “impressions” you receive on the site you are advertising. This is not a great option unless you expect massive click-throughs with your advertisement, CPM may be more cost effective.

What I have found is that Facebook browsers click through to just about anything. You are better off paying for CPM (per impression) especially if you are giving a service or product away. A click through doesn’t necessarily mean a sale and then if you people just click and don’t buy you might as well have reach more people and paid less.

Use Online Forums That Optimize Online Ads
There are websites that will optimize ads for you. If you, for example, become a new Google AdWords member you have 30 days free of charge where they educate you about the entire Google platform, how to market, where to market and how much you REALLY need to spend to accomplish your goals. It’s a fantastic free service! Here are some other platforms with low costs for ads that promote click throughs at a much lower rate than Facebook and Google AdWords but use links on Twitter and/or Facebook to promote your business:

  • Magpie (a tweet service that pays others to promote your link)
  • My Likes (Unlike Magpie you actually choose what links you promote on your own terms)
  • RevTwt (register and pay others to promote your products)
  • TwitAd
  • Sponsored Tweets (new by IZEA a SEO Ad platform)

For Facebook ads, it’s simple. You identify what geographical area(s) you want to advertise in, ages you want to reach, what “likes” your customers might have in common and you bid on a CPC or CPM basis with a daily budget that FB will not allow you exceed, unless you change it. It protects you and your budget, but again I heed you on using CPC for sales and giveaways.

Creating Business Names and Logos

Recommend Us On Google

This blog will cover three keys to opening your own business:

  1. Naming Your Business: How to Choose a Name
  2. Logo Creation: Necessary or not?

Naming Your Business: How to Choose a Name

We all like to be creative especially when we are passionate about something such as opening up our own business, but how do you choose the name of a business?

You would think you would just choose items or words you like and it would be simple, right? Wrong! Aside from finding a name that you like, you have to find a name that is not copyrighted, trademarked or taken on the web if you want to have a web site – otherwise you could be in for an uphill battle.

For example, my name is Camden Smith and I wanted to name my business Camden Communications, but it was already trademarked and the domain was taken so clearly choosing that name would have created unnecessary road blocks to building my business.

First, to find a name you should build a word list of words you like that describe how you feel about your company or how you want customers to feel. Choose words that give a visual picture.

Once you have words you like start combining them with a term that describes your business such as inspection, marketing or whatever activity/service your business provides. The name has to be creative but it has to be understood.

My marketing firm, which I just opened, is called DREAMFly Marketing, but I didn’t arrive at that name willingly. I started with DREAMFly Design and Communication, but quickly learned on LinkedIn that some people thought communication referred to cell phone sales or telemarketing.

After you have two or three business names in the running, then you must search to see if the business is trademarked. To do this, you can search on www.trademarkia.com and you may also apply there for a trademark. The way around these big trademark fees is to copyright the business name in your state.

The last thing you have to do before deciding to officially launch your business is search www.godaddy.com or another web site sales site and see if the url you would need for a web site is actually available. If it is not available, you may need to rethink the name you have your heart set on. Clearly, www.dreamflydesignandcommuncation.com would have been a ridiculous web address.

So, you’ve named your business now. How does it sound? Strong? Passive? Aggressive? How do you want customers to feel about your business and what do you want them to picture in their minds when they hear the name?

Ask friends what they think about your business name and ask them what picture they have in their head when they hear the name. You will know if you’ve chosen the right name.

I asked probably 20 people what they thought about DREAMFly Marketing and every single person said they had the visual picture of flying to their dreams – bingo! Choosing a company name that describes what you do is just as important as one that creates a positive picture in people’s minds.

Logo Creation: Necessary or Not

Without a logo your business name will very simply look like letterhead

Who will that appeal to? If you are doing a business like pet sitting out of your home, you may think it isn’t necessary to have a logo, but if you plan on advertising and designing a web site and business cards, you should have a graphic design that is consistent in all of your marketing work.

You can pay $199 or more for a logo design and trust me you get what you pay for…but it really depends on what kind of logo you need. As a marketing professional, I suggest you use your best judgment – a logo may be something you can wait on whereas applying for a TAX ID and an Limited Liability Corporation application is something that must be immediate.

Although my marketing firm handles graphic design for advertising and brochures, we are not a logo design company. Do not make the mistake of thinking you are a logo designer if you are in fact not a logo designer. This could in fact hurt your business. Most clip art cannot be used in a logo legally.

I personally like www.logonerds.com, because the price is right and the designs don’t use tons of clipart but maintians a rich 3D feel to them. Another good site is www.logomojo.com, but the prices are more expensive ($199) for the same amount of work from Logo Nerds ($68). Choose what is right for the company look you want and need and the price that fits your budget.

How You Plan Determines Your Success

Starting a business is the simple part, but marketing it to clients is challenging. Always remember you start marketing your business, the minute you start thinking about developing it, because you are talking to friends and family about it and contacting other professionals for advice.

Choose a strong, understandable name that can be trademarked and set up as a web site. Make sure to create a logo so that it sets you apart….the rest is up to you. I hope my lessons in this process help you make great choices. Please share this people you feel this may help.

You are welcome to email me at Camden@Dreamflymarketing.com.
