Learn How to Use QR Codes

Endorse Us With Google+

Crazy QR Codes Broken Down Simply

In last week’s blog, guest blogger Blase Ciabaton, discussed direct mail and how to make it relevant by using QR Codes. Some of you asked for expanded information on QR codes.

Defining a QR Code
QR codes are ‘Quick Response Codes’. It’s just like placing a link on your web site, but a QR code appears as an invisible, machine-like link.

naples marketing, marketing strategy, dreamfly marketing

Use your smart phone to scan this QR code as a special thank you. You'll need QR Droid or another application to scan the code.

It’s easier to learn by DOING – get out your application-based smart phone (iphone, Androids etc.). Scan the QR code to the right and see where it takes you! It will not install anything on your phone or collect information.

Businesses are using QR codes, but the trick as with all marketing tactics is strategy.

What can QR codes link to?
It is a way to surprise website visitors or consumers receiving a printed piece with your QR code something very special that perhaps you aren’t sharing with everyone, like an invitation-only web page.

QR codes can link customers to:

  • SMS a message to cell phone users up to 140 characters allowing them to opt in and receiving your promos
  • Plain text to deliver a message
  • A web site – you can create an invitation-only page just for your QR code customers
  • QR code, qr codes for restaurants, naples marketing firm, marketing strategy

JagTag produced this QR Code Campaign for a Restaurant Client

  • An online document such as a pdf file or e-book
  • A photo
  • Coupons perhaps if you are running ads on Naples’ Bloc Deals or nationwide Groupon

Producing a QR code does nothing unless you call people’s attention to it.

JagTag is a company that has set the tone for national brands and QR Codes by removing up to 60% of the mechanical looking design converting the codes to look more brand savvy as pictured right.

Make QR Codes part of your marketing strategy.

Where in the World Do I Display QR Codes?
Recently two national brands have used QR codes in interesting methods.

Cool Uses of QR Codes
On cupcakes for a special event, on printed materials to give to customers, on your business’s front door. Use them. Incorporate them…otherwise you are wasting your time.

QR Code Usage Hits
QR Code design, movie poster QR codes, naples marketing, marketing strategy

Brilliant use of QR Code to launch a movie.

QR Codes on food, qr codes for restaurants, naples marketing, marketing strategy

Clever! QR Code printed on sugar cube for a special event serving food.

QR Code at businesses, marketing strategy, naples marketing

Display a QR Code with Google Places at your business's front door. Customers will connect.

Disney qr codes, naples marketing, marketing strategy

Disney is still King. Look closely they deleted part of the QR Code as we suggested and recreated the character's faces. Brilliant!

National Brands Using QR Codes Successfully

estee lauder illluminator, naples marketing, qr codes, jagtags

2011 product launch by Estee Lauder used JagTags or QR Codes.

1. Estee Lauder launched its new Idealist Illuminator (spot lightening) serum with customer hand out or point-of-sale cards at the makeup counters displaying a QR Code that took customers to a web page explaining the product and airing a TV commercial.

Their strategy was to capitalized on their existing television advertising and provide the consumer with confidence in purchasing the new skin treatment. It worked!

2. IHOP printed a QR Code on its place mats taking customers to a web page to sign up for special IHOP deals – what a reward!

Consumers may not like to share their information but these days if it means a deal – they’re in!

QR Codes are not the end-all marketing answer, but if properly incorporated with marketing strategy QR Codes will increase web site traffic or increase business foot traffic PLUS YOU CAN PRODUCE A CODE FREE!

How are you using QR Codes or what questions do you have? Post here!

Social Media Business Shake Down

Endorse Us With Google+

Social Media’s Cup Runneth Over and Businesses Feel the Hit

Social Media platforms are changing at a fast clip therefore making it a true challenge to conquer for private users and businesses. Bad news….more changes are looming.

What to Expect

Social Media Expectations Should Change
Cisco’s leadership at the Corporate Social Media Summit laid out dozens of reasons why larger corporations may wish to start creating their own internal social media platforms. Why in the world would businesses do this?

Individuals born 1970 or later are completely familiar with and driven by social media interaction. They are checking into their favorite burger place using location-based social networking sites. Plus social media savvy audiences are sharing their lives with others on these platforms, and since 2010 business sharing has also increased.

Also in the news: Many businesses may not be receiving as much feedback on Facebook, because of Facebook Page operational changes. At the summit, experts discussed solutions for businesses in the ever-changing environment of social media.

Future of Work is in Social Media Communities
Andrew Warden the Head of Strategy for Emerging Markets Services at Cisco Systems has announced that intra rather than inter-net based social media platforms are the wave of the future.

Warden reported at the Corporate Social Media Summit held in New York City June 21-22, 2011 that using internal social media communication will allow employees to collaborate quicker and will create a more production savvy atmosphere for companies.

“The focus of social media so far as been on external branding — communicating your vision and values to your customers. But what about your employees? Do they understand the company’s vision? Do they share it?

Summary of Warden’s speech by Jesse Stanchak of SocialBlog on Social Media.

Work places will most likely reduce social media page blocking at work since the younger employment sector uses location-based social network sites to check into work which also in turn promotes the business. For example, I checked into DREAMFly Marketing today on FourSquare, LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook Places, Google Places, GoWalla and Yelp reminding people about the business in addition to the special sales we run on FourSquare. More on this later.

Facebook Decreases Business Page Communication
In February 2011, Facebook made changes that businesses continue to complain about in blogs. Some of the changes have created better user interaction. Facebook has removed most Facebook Business Pages from the main news feeds to individual accounts.

Facebook Page status updates primarily appear in users’ updates section which most of them are not checking. The Facebook Developer’s Blog wrote on June 24, 2011, “We encourage you to proactively review user posts and make sure that they provide engaging and welcome content.”

What does this mean for you?
You could be reported as SPAM and not actually be a SPAMMER!
Facebook is slowly moving away from a business focus and returning to its original purpose to connect former classmates, friends and family. It is still a fantastic way to promote your business and establish yourself as an industry expert, but anticipated, further changes will alter Facebook usage requiring businesses to look outside of the social media giant to communicate with consumers.

Location-based websites will become the key along with mobile marketing.

The Changing Social Media Horizon

Yelp, DREAMFly Marketing, location-based social media

Snapshot of DREAMFly Marketing on Yelp

There are so many location-based social media sites now for people to use as “check-in” options that many users are beginning to complain there are too many choices.

To check into one business one person would choose to use: Facebook Places, Twitter status update, GoWalla, Yelp, FourSquare, Google Places, Google Latitude and many more.

So which location-based site should you use? It depends on what site your friends are using most, but the best is Yelp which hosts primarily reviews of businesses and FourSquare which allows businesses to give you coupons as you check into a location.

Do you find yourself wondering what is next?
With increased SPAM filters on Facebook, while it remains King for the time being, businesses will need to expand their strategy beyond Facebook using location-based social media networking sites as mentioned above.

The key is to use only the tools you or your staff are able to truly manage with a good strategy. It does some good to create, for example, a business location listing on FourSquare, but you will receive better ROI (return-on-investment of time) if you also post a coupon for individuals who check-in to your business.

To create a business listing on any location-based social media networking site, you simply need to create a free, private account and list the business. To manage the business however and edit its information, most sites such as FourSquare and Yelp require a business account, which is also free and allows you to create deals, coupons and a business profile.

With change happening every day and Google moving into social media, it’s anybody’s guess what is next…except that social media will continue to grow and businesses must focus on their external and internal marketing goals and use the quickest and easiest tools rather than diluting their efforts and failing.

Optimize Posts for Search Engines

It takes time to rank your web site on major search engines like Google, Yahoo or Bing. I am not talking about page rank that is offered by Google or Alexa.

Ranking on search engines depends on so many different matrix. Organic, links, in page hit of traffic, referrals and various types. In many cases, it is quite hard for people to make their web pages optimized; who doesn’t deal with professional SEO services. Hence, there are few general rules that I always follow to optimize posts for search engines on wordpress. I am going to elaborate few of the these techniques below.

[Related reading: Speed up wordpress blog by reducing external request]

Choose perfect heading for your article:
This is in-fact the most important of all. Let me give you a small example. Type this phrase on google “optimize posts for search engines on wordpress”.

You will see near about 447,000 results found. use these key words separately on Google Trends. Notice the relevance of each keywords. Here the data is scaled based on the average search traffic of the term you’ve entered. So if you can ensure to have perfect heading with defined keywords searched by major traffic then your chance to get hits increases a lot.

Use your title within your posts:
Have you seen this post already used the title twice?

This means when Google scans the post it will get more relevance with the title. Try to insert your title phrases you keywords technically so that your search engine hits get a rise.

Be consistent on headings:
Be very consistent while using headings within your posts.

If you give your title a tag <h1> then don’t use it again within your post. It is just like writing a thesis or published article. We always keep relevancy on heading there. For example, if the title is <h1> then a section heading will be within <h2> and if a section has sub heading they will go with <h3>.

Bold your keywords, give them some weight:
Have you seen I am using bold on this post? If you have a clear look you will see I am only bolding those words which are relevant to this post topic.

It helps robot to get determine proper keywords, because you are matching your giving keywords given on meta tags.

Choose proper keywords:
While choosing your keywords for your meta tag on <head> section try to insert keywords taken from your written posts. Especially those which are marked as bold.

For example in this post, keywords should be ‘optimize WordPress’, ‘posts for search engine’, ’SEO’ , ’perfect heading’ , ’keywords’ etc.

Final Touch
I am not a SEO guru, but a blog writer and web site developer I have to use few of these techniques. It works for me. I have seen many of my posts gets higher ranking by using these simple steps.

Hope it will work for you if you use these tips properly. Visit Evan’s
