Newsworthy Matters: Press Releases That Deliver Results

To be newsworthy means to be interesting. Right? Wrong! Make press releases sing to editors!

If public relations boiled down to “a business’s interests”, every newspaper in every community would write articles from all ten-thousand press releases editors receive each day. Writing your news and making it “newsworthy” is the key.

How to Make Press Releases Newsworthy Using Public Relations
One task for boosting publicity is to write press releases from the media’s point-of-view including both print media and bloggers. In terms of public relations, no media is old media – public relations calls for creativity…and thinking of your audience.

A board of directors may find a new CEO exciting, but….unless the company sending this type of announcement is a national brand, this type of press release will hit the editor’s waste basket.

Publicity: Promoting or gaining exposure for a business or an organization’s project such as a special event. It is a key part of strategic marketing plans, which every business should have.

While writing press releases is easy for publicity experts – for business owners, it may prove challenging.

Public Relations and Publicity strategies are misunderstood. Often, business owners focus on the less important facts and use self promotional language rather than writing press releases in news formats. Achieve better public relations results with our tips below.

Use these easy tips for writing press releases:

  • Download our press release template
  • Focus on economic trends and connections
  • View news from a consumer’s perspective not the business’s
  • Create different press releases for print media, broadcast (TV and radio) an online media outlets
  • Write for media not a board of directors as much as possible
    • Lead with strong language not a date or time – a real headline
    • Keep paragraph short to two or three sentences at most
    • Include self promotional language in the About Us section at the end of releases only
    • Write in active not passive voice
    • Include reliable sources for news release information
  • Analyze if you read the news whether you’d find it interesting as a consumer

Public Relations Steps to Writing a Release
Tell the media – why the news release – is important by writing a very strong lead. Rather than leading an event press release with the name of the event, the date and time, lead with a benefit-rich statement on how the event helps consumers.

As a Naples marketing agency, our team often walks the fine line between pleasing a client and writing material to capture the media’s attention.

Embrace control as a business owner or manager and learn what interests the audience.

Just because “boring” news is interesting to a business, doesn’t make it newsworthy to consumers or media outlets. It is easier to think of newsworthy as a measure on how beneficial or interesting a news item is.

Take advantage of free online services to distribute press releases to national and international media members such as Pitch Engine.

Make press releases newsworthy and boost publicity. Even if you hire a Public Relations Expert to write a release, the publicity delivers more than a thousand percent of that cost back to the business in advertising savings.

Be publicity smart. Write newsworthy content, and you will improve media relations, public relations as well as profits. Post your questions below!

PR Nightmares Can Happen To You

PR Nightmares Can Be Avoided with a Crisis Communication Plan

The Lifeguard Fired for Saving a Life – We Analyze the Case!

PR nightmares begin with simple mistakes that flourish into a media blitz of bad PR without following a Crisis Communication Plan. Bad press and public boycotts of companies begin only if a company fails to follow a Crisis Communication Plan.

Without a Crisis Communication Plan, you operate blindly and might as well open your doors to PR Nightmares and know they’ll come someday…maybe not today but someday.

When we do not listen to consumers or to basic business reasoning, our faulty decisions however well intended can produce PR nightmares and bad press for the company. It is a challenge to control the end result of the public with any business news whether good or bad, so have a plan!.

PR NIGHTMARE CASE STUDY: THE FIRED LIFEGUARD
The Case
Hallandale Beach, Florida hired Jeff Ellis Management to put lifeguard’s on the beach for the 2012 summer. After helping save a man’s life, one of the lifeguards, Hallandale Beach resident Tomas Lopez, was fired by the company.

Tomas Lopez explains how he saved a man's life and was fired for it in Hallandale Beach, Fla.

Other people pulled the drowning man out of the water, but Lopez helped care for him as soon as he was able to run outside of his zone and assist.

“I put him in the recovery position, which we are trained to do, and I had a nurse come and help me,” Lopez reported to media outlets.

The Questionable Decision and Bad PR
The management company informed Lopez that because he went out of the company’s coverage zone to save the drowning man he put other beach goers in jeopardy and had to be let go due to insurance and other issues.

The PR Nightmare Needed a Communication Plan
Once media outlets reported on Lopez’s firing to the world, a PR Nightmare brewed quickly for the management company with a public outcry that included threats against executive and sent them to the board room to lick their wounds and rethink their decision. View NBC’s National Coverage of the Story

The media blitz painted a crystal clear picture that where the consumers’ minds are could be entirely different than a company’s executives.

Click refresh on your browser to load this Youtube media coverage or click here.

Millions of people from all over the world have commented online and directly to the company about how they feel it is wrong he was fired.

“There’s no way I’m agreeing with the company. If I see someone dying or they need my help, I’m going to go help them, because that’s my job,” said Zoard Janko, one of lifeguards.

Management’s Additional Mistakes
Leave a drowning man on his own? Does that sound like a positive PR statement?

That is EXACTLY what newspapers quoted executives saying.

This quote sent people all over the world into a cry that could be heard with millions of comments on online blogs, like this one, and television outlets as well as social media platforms.

Lopez Offered Job Back
The company decided to offer Lopez his job back, and he refused to return.

Why a bad decision? Because executives waited for a public outcry to act and four other lifeguards prior to Lopez had been fired for the same reason. Anyone smell a lawsuit?

DREAMFly Marketing’s Lifeguard Case Ruling
Talking your way out of a controversy is often the worst decision you can make, even if there are two sides to the story.

If it sounds bad, it probably shouldn’t be said. Basic public relations plans include a crisis communication plan. A crisis communication plan provides steps for better public relations or public reaction.

Media plans often suggest rather than control media interviews and direct management, to instead release a statement focused on the positives with few mentions about the controversial points.

In this case, a release or statement may have focused on the heroic nature of the company’s life guard who saved a drowning man’s life and then towards the end could have discussed briefly a reason for the firing.

PR Communication Plan Lesson Summary
In life as in business, there are few actions that are right or wrong, but a consumer’s perception is reality so think hard and fast before you react to a controversy.

Lesson of the week: have a PR plan and keep news positive even if your company is in the hot seat

Three Publicity Advertising Equivalency Calculations

Endorse Us With Google+

Three Calculations for Press Release Publicity Value

Publicity and public relations are key to growing a business. For business marketing in Florida especially, publicity is often the best return-on-investment.

Did You Know?
Media savvy press releases can bring in more business than an advertisement, according to research.

naples website designer, publicist, publicity campaign value

No box needed. Be innovative and save money with added PR Campaign value!

Public relations boasts a value 20 times more than it costs your business marketing budget…when you think out of the box.

Stop Waiting – Start Using our 3 Publicity Value Calculations below!

Publicity Calculation One:
Calculate Costs of Writing Valuable Press Releases

  • Write a press release for the media and a second press release for customers to post to your website news area.
  • Valuable press releases give reporters solid stories they can expand upon
  • Business press releases must focus on publicity opportunities as well as conveying an accurate message
For example, avoid writing a press release about a subject such as a board appointment if it will not garner media attention. It’s a waste of time.
  • Publicity is the result of a great press release requiring marketing managers story pitch the idea to media rather than let it sit in a reporter or editor’s inbox
  • Start a press release with a strong lead. Below is a good press release lead example and a weak one.
Weak Press Release lead: “Dreamfly Marketing announced today it would be expanding its services to include publicity value tracking to small business.”
Good Press Release lead: “Small businesses in Naples, Fort Myers and Estero, Florida will now have an affordable way to track press release value with Dreamfly Marketing’s new publicity value program.”

Download our FREE press release template to get started!

Publicity Calculation Two:
Create a Publicity Event Around the Press Release

Now this can be tricky. Not every piece of news calls for a publicity event or stunt, BUT when companies use publicity stunts or events it works!

Publicity Opportunities and Ideas
Receive publicity value with press releases by executing marketing tactics with media members.

  • Create a media day to compliment press release announcements.
Announcing an expansion? Give a media tour! Announcing a new product? Give them reporters a sneak peak and ask for unfettered product reviews.
  • Story pitch the “release” news to editors and reporters in advance of the press release.
  • Find related business partners to participate in the announcement to expand the level of media interest
  • MOST IMPORTANT PLAN AHEAD – important business announcements deserve a publicity plan

Calculation One and Two=Base Cost of Publicity
In calculation one, businesses may determine the “cost” associated with writing the press release including staff time. In calculation two, companies should include staff time and costs associated with planning the associated publicity event.

Calculation One plus Calculation Two provides the “base cost” of the PR campaign.

Publicity Calculation Three:
Advertising Value Equivalency for Public Relations Campaigns

The trick to learning the real advertising value equivalency is to track the media coverage received as a result of the PR campaign and all related press releases.

Business marketing 101: When tracking media coverage, include online media, newspapers, magazines, social media exposure and television coverage.

Convert all coverage to advertising dollars saved or your “advertising equivalency value.”

  • Newspaper ran a story 3 columns by 5 inches in black and white? Use the publication’s media kit to figure out how much an ad that size would have cost.
THAT IS YOUR ADVERTISING EQUIVALENCY VALUE
  • Perform a comparable value calculation for television and online media.
  • If a website published your news release and does not have online advertising, calculate the news coverage based on Google Adwords costs for the keyterms used in the story. This provides a general idea of the value.

Calculate the Value of Public Relations Campaigns – It is Important
Answering to a board or a boss? The advertising equivalency value calculation puts fuel into PR Campaigns and provides greater support from the top down.

Performing this value calculation, provides a clear picture as to how much money a company saved with simple media exposure. It works!

How do you calculate the value of PR Campaigns and press releases? Tell us – share below!

Public Speaking Tips

  • Memorize information about the subject you are speaking about and DO NOT stray!
  • Say you’ll get back with the reporter if you aren’t prepared. Don’t get trapped.
  • Humor is good on some occasions but Tiger Blood comments sound loony.
  • Just because you want to say it doesn’t mean you should.
  • Publicity build consumer confidence. Turn bad publicity into good by promoting company changes etc. like Tylenol did when it had a contamination and in turn promoted its immediate changes and turned the story around.
